Cycas - the only genus of the Cycadaceae, a family distributed between South East Asia, Africa, Oceania, where we find species with heights at maturity varying from 50 cm to 3-4 m.The resemblance to palms should not be misleading: they are plants belonging to the group of Gymnosperms.
Together with a dozen genera belonging to the Stangeriacee and Zamiacee families, they constitute what remains today of a group of plants that appeared on Earth in the Permian (once very rich in genera and species), 230 million years ago: the order of Cycadales. This species is endemic to Australia and grows on soils that originate from the degradation of serpentine rocks and hence the specific epithet.
